Types of Support Groups
PSCKY offers multiple support groups in the area. In 2010, we will help more neighborhoods start support groups in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. If there is not a support group listed that serves your area, or your interests, let us know: support@pscky.org. We can help get a group going that meets your needs! Exercise-Based Support Groups
1. Even BIGGER*: In collaboration with Frazier Rehab, we are pleased to offer a weekly practice and support group for people who have completed at least eight sessions of LSVT® BIG therapy. The group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 7pm at the Masonic Homes of Louisville, under the leadership of BIG certified therapists, to reinforce and practice the BIG movements. 2. Let's Dance!*: Dance therapy has been shown to help balance, movement and mood for people with Parkinson's. We're currently collaborating with Bellarmine University's Physical Therapy Department to leadership for this dance-based support group. Group meets on Tuesdays from 9:30-10:30am at Dance Louisville (our thanks to owner Brian Barakauskas for allowing us to use the beautiful studio!). New sessions running from June 8-July 27th. 3. 'Moving On' with Parkinson's Disease*: led by Dyna Zehnder (registered Yoga Teacher)

An exercise class created to meet the needs of those with Parkinson's disease within Shelby County and surrounding areas.

With roots in Yoga, 'Moving On' helps the student by building strength, flexibility, and balance through gentle movement and stretching.

Helps improve communication by strengthening muscles in the face, throat, and mouth.

Reduces stress in the body by practicing breathing and relaxation techniques.

Offers support and encouragement by connecting people together.

Open to people with Parkinson's and their care partners.
Monday 'Moving On'*: Meets Mondays evenings at 6:30pm, Jewish Hospital Shelbyville Community Room (rear of hospital); Hospital Drive off Hwy 60. To register, e-mail dynazehn@myway.com or call 502-377-7562. There is no cost for this group and the group has openings!
Thursday 'Moving On'*: Meets Thursday evenings at 6:30pm, Family Activities Center, Clear Creek Parks. (We are grateful for the generosity of Mr. Clay Cottongim, director of Shelby County Parks, for the use of this new space.) To register, e-mail dynazehn@myway.com or call 502-377-7562. There is no cost for this group and the group has openings!
4. Louisville “Chair Yoga”*: led by Kathleen Geile (certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor). Held Tuesdays at noon, Yoga at Crescent Hill, housed at Crescent Hill UMC; 201 S Peterson Ave, Louisville KY 40206. To register, e-mail support@pscky.org or call 502-426-0888. Suggested donation: $10/month, however all people with Parkinson's and their care partners are welcome at no charge. July sessions are 6, 13, 20, and 27. Chair Yoga classes will NOT meet the month of August, but will resume in September.
5. Move It or Lose It!*: Norton Audubon Hospital, in partnership with PSCKY, is offering a weekly exercise support group led by certified instructor Amy Robinson and medically supervised by Audubon's Rehab Director, Zorre' Kimura PT. Held Thursdays from 9-10am at Norton Audubon Hospital, Joint Care Gym, 6th floor. To register, call 502-426-0888 or e-mail support@pscky.org. There is no cost and you may join at any time!
6. Walking & Hiking Group*: If you're interested in being part of this group, please contact Jinn at info@pscky.org or call her at 502-426-0888. We are presently re-formatting the group, but it will be continuing to meet!
Special Interest Support Groups
Young Movers & Shakers* (for men in their 30s, 40s and 50s)
Movers & Shakers (Men Only)*: Are you a man with Parkinson's disease? Are you in your 30's, 40's or 50's? There's a new group up and running, and you can be part of it! This conversation group meets every other week on Wednesdays at 5:30pm. If you're interested in taking part, please call the group's host, Christopher Miller, at 502-415-4747; e-mail cemiller55@gmail.com.
For People Who Have Had or Are Considering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
DBS Support Group*: Meets every three months on a Saturday at 11am at Milestone Wellness Center. Lunch is provided. For information or to RSVP, please contact Lynn Hundley (502-896-7455 or lynn.hundley@bhsi.com). Next meeting: September 25th. The speaker is elder care attorney Rhoda Faller, speaking about important legal documents for people with PD.
For Care Partners of People with Parkinson's Disease
1. Sure Steps Group*: Meets the second Monday of each month at 5:30pm. Location varies. Group generally meets for dinner and conversation, and invites a speaker every third month. Hosted by Debbie Buckler. RSVPs requested; call Debbie at 502-599-9461 or 618-0658; e-mail debra.buckler@att.net. In July, the meeting will be at Home Instead Senior Care and will feature Dr. Libby Bethel, speaking about depression, anxiety and apathy in people with PD and their care partners.
2. For Care Partners of People with PD and Dementia*: Any care partner or family member of someone with PD and dementia is welcome to join this group. The groups meets on the first Monday of each month at 5:30pm at KT's Restaurant & Bar (off of I-64 at the Grinstead Avenue exit). Anyone interested in this group, can contact host Mary Kay Flege at 502-664-8560, email mflege@bellsouth.net. In July: group is meeting Monday, July 12th instead of Monday, July 5th. Open discussion is planned.
Art-Related Support Groups
1. Art & Discussion group (new group forming soon!)*: Working in partnership with Tom Boykin (artist and person with PD), this group will learn a beautiful form of collage artwork together with Tom's guidance. If you're interested in being part of this group, which will start in late spring or early summer of 2010, please contact Jinn at info@pscky.org or call her at 502-426-0888.
Please note change of time and location for the Music & Wellness Group. 2. Music & Wellness group (still taking registrations!)*:In partnership with the Robert Lerman Memorial Music Library and Music Therapy Department at Norton Audubon Hospital, this weekly music and wellness group provides group music therapy to people with Parkinson's disease from April-September 2010. Meets on Mondays at 1pm at Norton Audubon Hospital, 2nd floor in the music library. If you're interested in being part of this group, please contact Katherine at 502-426-0888. Class size is limited, but the group still has openings.
 Monthly Educational and Support
1. Open House at PSCKY*: Held one Friday of each month from 10am-2pm at the PSCKY offices, 4912 US Hwy 42, Ste 105. For more information, call 502-426-0888 or e-mail support@pscky.org. Next open house: July 30th. Please stop by! We have a lot of new books and love the chance to visit with you and answer questions.
2. Brown Bag “Lunch & Learn” Series*: On the fourth Wednesday of each month, we bring special speakers to provide education and information about topics that are important to you. You bring your lunch; we provide drinks and desserts. No RSVP required unless event details indicate otherwise. During the second half of the year, we will be meeting at Jeffersonville Township Public Library in the General Purpose Room (211 E Court Ave, Jeffersonville IN 47130). If you're coming from Louisville across the Kennedy Bridge, take exit zero and turn right at the light at the end of the ramp onto Court Avenue. After the intersection with Spring Street, begin looking to your left for the library (the post office is next to it!). Take a left onto Locust to access the parking lot. When you come into the building, turn right. The room overlooks the parking lot.

Wednesday, July 28th at noon: 'Progress & Prospects for Parkinson's Disease Prevention & Treatment', with Dr. Robert Friedland, Professor and Rudd Chair at the Department of Neurology, University of Louisville. No RSVP required; bring your lunch and we will provide drinks and desserts!
General Interest Support Groups
No RSVP is needed, unless otherwise noted. Please check our calendar to see the speaker, topic and location for each group. All general interest groups are open to people with Parkinson's, their friends, family members and the community, unless otherwise noted.
Monday Groups
Lexington, Kentucky Support Groups: Meets on Mondays at Crestwood Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky. For information and schedule of meetings, please call Tess Barrington; 859-278-2193. In July and August, the group will only meet on the fourth Monday of the month.
Tuesday Groups
1. Nazareth Home Support Group*: Meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:15 am in the chapel at Nazareth Home (2000 Newburg Road Louisville, KY 40205-1895). This group is open to anyone in the community with PD, care partners and family members. For more information, please contact host Sharon Mattingly at 479-2529.
2. Our Mother of Sorrows Support Group*: Meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:30pm in basement of school building next to Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church; 760 Eastern Pkwy. Please call Frank Eimer for more information: 502-458-6742 or e-mail frankjeimer@aol.com. The group will not meet in July, but will resume in August.
3. Hurstbourne/J-Town Group*: Meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at Home Instead Senior Care Meeting Room, 4610 Taylorsville Rd. Group hosts are Jim and Jeff Baugher. In July, Katie Flerlage--speech pathologist and LSVT Loud therapist--will speak about the benefits of LSVT Loud voice therapy for people with PD.
4. Shelbyville Support Group*: Meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm at Jewish Hospital Shelbyville Community Room (rear of hospital); Hospital Drive off Hwy 60. 5. Floyd Memorial Hospital Support Group* (newly affiliated!): Meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Indiana in the Paris Health Education Center, 1st floor across from cafeteria. Wednesday Groups
1. Bardstown Support Group*: Meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 1pm at the Nelson County Public Library Community Room; 201 Cathedral Manor. For more information, please call Jane at 502-350-4458 or e-mail osljane@aol.com. From June-August, taking a summer break. Group will begin meeting again in September!
2. South Louisville Support Group*: Meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6pm at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in the Kyle Pratt Room. For more information, call group host Ed Yeater at 502-749-5286 or e-mail yeaterins@insightbb.com. In July: Dr. Walter Olson, Jr. will speak about PD and answer YOUR questions!
Thursday Groups
1. Henry County Support Group*: Meets on the third Thursday of each month at 1pm at Henry County Fairgrounds (1106 Castle Road, New Castle). An open support group sponsored by PSCKY for people with Parkinson's, care partners, family and friends. No RSVP required. For more information, please contact Joy Hay, 532-6089 or 396-4826. In June: open discussion.
2. Elizabethtown Support Group*: Meets on the third Thursday of each month at 3pm at HealthSouth Lakeview Rehab Hospital in the therapy gym. A mix of conversation and speakers. For more information, email kim.jones@healthsouth.com or call Kim at 270-769-3100 x305. Group will not meet in July due to a special medication workshop to be held on July 29th. 3. Scott County Indiana Support Group: Meets on the third Thursday of each month at 5pm at Scott Memorial Hospital, Conference Rm A; 1471 N Gardner Ave. For more information, call 812-416-1658. This group generally has speakers.
Saturday Groups
Oldham County (Kentucky) Support Group*:.This group meets at the beautiful offices of La Grange Family Care Doctors on the third Saturday each month at 2p.m. The accessible site is located immediately off I-71 at Exit 22 on KY 53. Our thanks to the Dr. Kemparajurs and the staff of La Grange Family Care doctors for offering this site to our community! For more info, call Katherine at 502-426-0888 or e-mail support@pscky.org. Due to conflict with Oldham County Day, the group will not meet in July, but will reconvene on Saturday, August 21st.
